P.J. Crowley Resigns

“I spent 26 years in the Air Force,” Crowley, a retired colonel, said, according to blog posts by two of those present at the MIT discussion. “What is happening to Manning is ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid, and I don’t know why the DoD is doing it. Nevertheless, Manning is in the right place” in detention.

Crowley made these remarks and now has resigned. The remarks were made at a MIT new media roundtable. It is being reported that Manning has complained about his treatment in detention, and now he is being asked to strip his clothes each night, for fear of suicide but, I guess the psychiatrist has said he's not a suicide risk.

I have little sympathy for this scum but, I'm not exactly sure what Crowley is really referring to here. The remark is fairly vague. What does he suggest we do differently?

“What I said was my personal opinion. It does not reflect an official [U.S. government] policy position,” Crowley told Foreign Policy magazine on Friday. “I defer to the Department of Defense regarding the treatment of Bradley Manning.”

“We are aware of Mr. Crowley’s remarks and have since sent him the facts on PFC Manning’s pre-trial confinement,” a Pentagon spokesman, Army Col. Dave Lapan, said Saturday.

There is nothing here that indicates that Manning is being tortured or treated any differently than anyone else who is a criminal. Okay, he hasn't been tried yet. He deserves his day in court but, I'm not buying this idea that we are treating him so terrible.

What do you think?
