Obama's Change in Drug Policy

According to the article on the AP, Obama's new drug policy will be more focused on reducing drug demand by pushing for prevention and intervention.

Critics of the policy are saying they like the rhetoric but, that the budget has not changed much since, it still seems to push for arresting and prosecuting.

He also lifted a ban that originally prevented federal funding going toward needle exchange programs.

Obama also would like doctors to ask patients about drugs during routine visits. The theory behind this is to see if the doctor can intervene before the problem gets out of hand. He also wants to be able to find any doctors that are over prescribing highly addictive pain killers.

I think this might be a good direction to go. It would at least be something different. However, I'm not too keen on the idea of federal money paying for needles of drug addicts.

The drug issue has always been an odd topic for me, as I have never been able to quite make up my mind on how to best handle this problem. Something has to be done, I just am not sure what exactly. What do you think?
