Dershowitz vs. Chomsky

In 2012 a debate took place at Harvard between Alan Dershowitz and Noam Chompsky; the topic was Israel.

Considering the current situation in the Middle East, I am posting this debate for those that have not seen it before or those who would like to see it again.

Israelis Preparing

Israel has been distributing gas masks in preparation for strikes that may occur should the US strike at Syria.

Officials reported a surge in inquiries, deliveries and people lining up for the free kits, as the United States and its Western allies gathered support for a strike on Syria in retaliation for last week’s alleged poison gas attack outside Damascus. The Syrian government denies responsibility for the attack, which killed hundreds, including many women and children.

 A U.N. weapons team is inspecting the sites, searching for definitive proof that banned chemicals were used. But the United States and its allies say information provided by intelligence services has convinced them that the government of President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons.

Should Israel come under attack, they are stating clearly that they will respond with force.

 Meanwhile Iran is declaring that they will attack Israel should the US strike Syria.

“The day of reckoning is near,” according to Hossein Shariatmadari, the chief editor of Keyhan newspaper, an outlet controlled by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

An Op-Ed penned by Shariatmadari Tuesday warned that the impending confrontation between the West and Syria would “provide the long-awaited opportunity for revenge against Israel and America.”

The article continues:

“Because of the failure of the intended proxy war, America and some Arab and European countries are preparing to attack Syria on the false claims that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons,” the editor said. “However, America can certainly start the war but it won’t be the one to end it.” 

Shariatmadari said that Israel is the “Achilles’ heel of America and its European allies and without a doubt with the start of an attack on Syria, thousands of missiles will rain down all over the occupied lands (Israel), which will destroy its critical facilities as it was obvious that its missile defense system (the Iron Dome) could not prevent missiles reaching Tel Aviv.”

In sharp reversal, U.S. agrees to rebuke Israel in Security Council - By Colum Lynch | Turtle Bay

The U.S. informed Arab governments Tuesday that it will support a U.N. Security Council statement reaffirming that the 15-nation body "does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity," a move aimed at avoiding the prospect of having to veto a stronger Palestinian resolution calling the settlements illegal.

But the Palestinians rejected the American offer following a meeting late Wednesdy of Arab representativs and said it is planning to press for a vote on its resolution Friday, according to officials familar with the issue. The decision to reject the American offer raised the prospect that the Obama adminstration will cast its first ever veto in the U.N. Security Council.

Still, the U.S. offer signaled a renewed willingness to seek a way out of the current impasse, even if it requires breaking with Israel and joining others in the council in sending a strong message to its key ally to stop its construction of new settlements. The Palestinian delegation, along with Lebanon, the Security Council's only Arab member state, have asked the council's president this evening to schedule a meeting for Friday. But it remained unclear whether the Palestinian move today to reject the U.S. offer is simply a negotiating tactic aimed at extracting a better deal from Washington.

Palestinians Ask Europe To Recognize Them As a State

Palestinians have now asked for Europe to recognize them as a state, 1967 borders.

Wow, do these folks have a lot of nerve or what?

Palestinian officials said Thursday that they had asked the consuls general of France, Britain, Sweden and Denmark as well as the European Union envoy to the peace process to recognize the 1967 borders between Israel and "Palestine."

The EU has said it will recognize a Palestinian state "when appropriate," but that negotiations are the only way to peace.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the seven member ministerial forum known as the 'Septet' were set to meet Thursday morning to discuss the return to indirect proximity peace talks between Israel and the PA proposed by US Middle East envoy George Mitchell.

Israel Blamed for Killing Iran Nuclear Scientist

Dr. Majid Shahriari, who is considered a top nuclear scientist, was killed and his wife was injured in a twin blast that occurred in Iran's capital.

Israel is being blamed - of course!

"In a criminal terrorist act, the agents of the Zionist regime attacked two prominent university professors who were on their way to work," the website of Iran's state television network reported, referring to archfoe Israel.

"Dr. Majid Shahriari was killed and his wife was injured. Dr. Fereydoon Abbasi and his wife were injured," the report said.

Fars news agency said the scientists were targeted in two different locations by men on motorcycles who approached their vehicles and attached bombs to their cars.

Shahriari was a member of the nuclear engineering department of Shahid Beheshti University in northern Tehran, according to the official IRNA news agency.

US and Israel

On a conference call with American Jewish leaders today, a White House official said the administration hadn't sought a confrontation with the Israelis over a new construction announcement.

President Barack Obama answered a question at a press conference on the subject straightforwardly but hadn't specifically planned to make a statement criticizing new Israeli building, National Security Council official Dan Shapiro said on the call, according to a participant.

The White House prefers not to litigate its differences with Israel in public, Shapiro told the group.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had a marathon seven-hour meeting yesterday with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that produced a noncommittal statement.

One note on the call that left participants dissatisfied: The official said he wasn't aware of a recent letter from chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat to a Palestinian convicted in the assassination of an Israeli cabinet minister.

Erekat described the letter as "humanitarian" and said it wasn't a gesture of support for the deed.

The Obama administration confuses me. They have no core, no direction. The only thing consistent with this administration, seems to be that they say one thing to the public and, do another behind closed doors.

Turkey is proud of you!

"Turkey is proud of you!" and "Down with Israel!" was the shouted welcoming for the 466 activists, that returned to Istanbul. These are the people that were said to be helping Palestinians in Gaza but, instead got into a conflict with Israeli soldiers.

I am not clear on all the facts of this story and I say that because, the liberal media is so anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian, that I feel as though the reports coming out of the press are totally slanted. I feel like Israel is not getting a fair deal in this. It's as if they haven't been able to fully tell their side of the story through the media.

We all know the problems that Israel has had with the Gaza area. It seems as though the Israeli's had boarded the ship, thinking that this was a ship filled with "peace loving" people, people who were bringing help to Palestinians, and did not expect to be met with violence. They were obviously checking the ship as part of routine.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what other details might emerge from all this. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but, I am usually leery when I hear stories that appear to have major holes in them.

US Cancels Envoy Visit to Israel

Washington told Israel that envoy, George Mitchel, has canceled his trip. This appears to be the result of Israel announcing a project to build 1600 apartments in East Jerusalem. Of course, you can only imagine, the Palestinians are whining about this, and it looks like Washington is trying to send a message supporting Palestinians.

Again, we are hearing about Palestinians acting like animals - hurling rocks, and burning tires.

Ancient Fortifications Found Support Biblical Reference

Eilat Mazar, an Israeli archeologist, believes she has discovered an age to fortifications found in Jerusalem. She claims that they are indeed 3,000 years old and that this goes hand in hand with the story from the Bible about a strong centralized government having a presence there during that time. According to the Bible, kings Solomon and David were ruling at that time.

"It means that at that time, the 10th century, in Jerusalem there was a regime capable of carrying out such construction," she said.

Of course, there are folks that are saying they don't see the evidence that way or, they don't agree. Mazar is convinced this finding is accurate, supportive of the Bible's account, and that the age of material found is indeed 3,000 years old.

US Wants Peace In The Middle East - Again

The Obama Administration will take it's stab at trying to get Isreal to negotiate with the Palestinian's. Since, last year, talk efforts hit a dead end.

"We're going to be even more committed this year, and we're starting this new year with that level of commitment and we're going to follow through and hopefully we can see this as a positive year in this long process," Clinton told reporters after the meeting.

Because, we've never been "more committed" before, right?

According the article, we will be offering our opinions or, "guarantees" in letters concerning the desired outcome.

The letters are likely to contain gestures to both sides. For the Palestinians, that would include criticism of settlements and the belief that the borders that existed before the 1967 Arab-Israeli War be the basis of a future peace deal. For the Israelis, they would acknowledge that post-1967 demographic changes on the ground must be taken into account, meaning that Israel would be able to keep some settlements.

So, basically, if you're attacked and you win the war, you should give up what you won because, it's not fair?!?!

It is unbelievable to me that we even get our noses involved in this. Israel is our ally. We support them, end of story. We are at war with these Muslim extremists, why do we keep forgetting this?

Israel Will Do Anything To Stop Iran

Well, the differences in the Bush administration and the Obama administration are very obvious.

Israel is clearly doing the correct thing and standing firm against Iran. This is exactly what the US should be doing.

Instead, Obama is sending the message that they want to sit down with Iran and give Israel problems.
