The new statewide telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary voters shows Santorum picking up 42% of the vote to Romney’s 24%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich draws 13% support, while Texas Congressman Ron Paul picks up 10%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and eight percent (8%) are undecided.
Will Santorum be the next Huckabee? Will he win the states that are considered more socially conservative, but lose the blue states where they like their Republicans more liberal? When the blue states end up picking the Republican, the result is unsatisfactory as a whole. We saw this with McCain. Sure, he got the most votes in the primary but those votes came from blue states that ultimately went to Obama for the election.
